What is Hair Porosity?
HAIR POROSITY
Knowing your hair porosity level will save you a lot of time, headache and money! It will allow you to chose products that are compatible with your hair.
Heat and chemicals can adjust the porosity and alter the levels of your hair. The three levels are Low, Medium and High! As hair porosity can alter very easily, it is important to monitor key changes in the behaviour of your hair when reacting to regular products, washes and care routines.

Low Hair Porosity
Hair cuticles are tightly bound together. Hair can be difficult to absorb moisture, difficult to chemically process and can take longer for treatments to show anticipated results as the cuticles are resistant to penetration. Your hair may take a long time to get wet or a long time to dry.
HAIR TIP: USE DEEP CONDITIONERS WITH HEAT TO OPEN UP CUTICLES. USE PRODUCTS RICH IN EMOLLIENTS. USE LIGHTER PRODUCTS. APPLY PRODUCTS WHEN DAMP.

Medium Hair Porosity
It is normal to have a medium porosity level. If your hair is shiny, healthy and absorbs moisture well then it is likely your porosity level is medium. This hair level requires the least amount of maintenance. Your hair cuticles allow just the right amount of moisture in and they are able to retain it well.
HAIR TIP: PROTEIN HEAVY PRODUCTS NOT TO BE USED DAILY. OCCASIONALLY DEEP CONDITION

High Hair Porosity
This hair porosity level can be the outcome of rough treatment, change in environment or weather conditions, genetically inherited from parents or the cause of damage from over processing or chemicals. The cuticles of the hair have gaps and holes which make the hair strands easier to absorb but difficult to retain the moisture. You may find that your hair may tangle or frizz more due to the cuticles being raised and open if you have a high porosity level.
HAIR TIP: LAYER UP ON LEAVE-IN CONDITIONERS, USE HEAVY BUTTERS FOR PROTECTION. APPLY WHEN EXTREMELY WET. CLOSE CUTICLES WITH COLD WATER. LET YOUR HAIR AIR DRY
HOW TO TAKE THE POROSITY TEST

Step 1) Wash your hair
Step 2) DO NOT condition your hair
Step 3) DO NOT towel dry, let air dry.
Step 4) Put clean strand with NO PRODUCT in it in a room temperature glass of water
Step 5) DO NOT touch the strand, let is sit for 15 mins
If you strand floats it is low porosity. If it immediately sinks or sinks before 15 mins it is high porosity. If it is in the middle it is medium or normal porosity.
DO NOT go with the signs go with the test. Results are only accurate if you followed the exact steps.
